Desert Island Photos

December 18, 2018

This week at Desert Island Photos we are joined by club member Gary Bradley .

How long have you been a member of the club?

I have been a Member since around 2011 I joined to learn how to use my camera better. I had no clue what most of the photographic terms meant. ISO, Aperture, shutter speed etc were all alien to me.

When did you first get into photography?

I first got into photography around 2000 but only to take pictures for a local Bowling Club's website, which I created and ran for around 12 years. During that time it was just a compact sony camera set to fully automatic.

How would you describe your Photography?

I would describe my photography as a passionate hobby that gives me a welcome break from my role as a 'Carer' at home looking after my partner, Ann Marie who has MS. These days most of my time is spent photographing at either Greenock Morton or Greenock Wanderers as I volunteer for both of these local clubs. I also really enjoy taking shots of the night sky, landscapes, street photography and now and then I use fire and water to create something different, i.e. steel wool pics and dropping items of food into water and capturing a water droplet as it hits collides with water.

What was your first camera?

My first 'proper' Camera was a Nikon D5100 with a kit lens.

Whats been your biggest waste of money on camera gear?

Biggest waste of money I have spent on gear was splashing out around £200 on Lee Filters and the holders!   Don't get me wrong this is high quality glass filters but I just did not have the time to get out and use them and they quickly were disposed on Ebay.

Be Honest - What kind of photography are you bad at?

I am no good at 'People' photography when having to use flash. I usually try to get out of it when people ask "will you do our wedding" etc I am just not confident in this area at all.

Whats the thing you enjoy most about photography?

The thing I enjoy best about photography is getting out for 'ME TIME' and meeting other photographers

What are you shooting with just now?

These days I shoot with a Nikon D7200 and D500 with lens to suit my needs, 18-200 Nikon, 50mm Nikon, Sigma 70-200 Sigma 10-20 and a Nikon 300 2.8

What advice would you give someone thinking of taking up photography?

Advice to someone just taking up photography?  Enjoy yourself, take photos for yourself, learn at your own pace and seek advice from a Camera Club, Camera Mags and if you are ever stuck on how to do something, use You Tube as its got the answer to so many areas of photography.

Whats is your desert island camera and lens set up?

Nikon D5 with a lazy lens and a big zoom for wildlife shooting or for seeing the rescue ship coming to get me.

Where can we see more of your work?
